present it!: Chevrolet Spark | drive it

Introduction
Chevrolet's range continues to grow and has been joined by a new smaller car offering, the Spark. Developed by General Motors' Korean engineering team to be a competitor in the European market, this car isn't a badge engineered model. No excuses this time.
What are its rivals?
The options are wide and varied and the traditional established players such as Fiat's Panda and 500, and Ford's Ka and Fiesta have been joined by newer contenders such as Kia's Picanto. Most pertinently for the Spark, Hyundai's i10 is perhaps the best budget small car on the market at the moment.
How does it drive?
As one would expect of a small car the Spark's controls are light and easy to use. Around town, it delivers thanks to good visibility and manoeuvrability and the torquey nature of its engine. It's clear that it has been developed to work in this environment and the effort has paid dividends.
As an urban runabout the Spark has something to offer. However, outside of town, the picture is not so good and the Spark lacks the composure and stability to be a trusty companion over longer distances at higher speeds. The handling is tidy, but not inspiring - competent, but not fun.
What's impressive?
Compared to previous small Chevrolet offerings, actually rebadged Daewoo Matiz variants, the Spark is a huge step forward in terms of dynamics, image and packaging. Aesthetically it carries a strong brand identity and the styling is clean and contemporary, complemented by a range of vibrant colours. Interior space is excellent and occupant safety is competitive too thanks to airbags and dynamic aids.
What's not?
Chevrolet may have come a long way with its small car but it's clear that the Spark has been built to a budget and the materials reflect that. Interior surfaces are not as soft or subtle as some rivals' and the overall comfort levels lag behind the best in class - the seats are acceptable for short journeys, but longer trips reveal their lack of support and cushioning.
There are also compromises with respect to the ergonomics such as the gearshift's action and the feel of the steering wheel rim. The layout and appearance of the dashboard is rather gimmicky and misses the class and clarity of the class leaders. Overall, it just lacks the quality and finish that buyers have come to expect, even in their small cars.
Should I buy one?
The supermini sector is particularly cut-throat - expectations for capability are disproportionately high given the modest outlays involved, but over time manufacturers have developed the metal to meet the demands of the consumer. However, what this has done is lift the bar to heights that are hard to attain for newcomers, and so it proves in the case of the Spark. There is just too much talent out there already that it's very difficult to recommend the Spark on merit. Only if the particular specifics of Chevrolet's car appeal in terms of aesthetics could one justify choosing it ahead of more capable rivals
