Ford Recalls Ranger, Excursion, E-Series, F-Series For Lighting Flaw

Ford Motor Company is issuing a recall for Ford Ranger trucks from the 2004 - 2011 model year. Also included in the recall are the 2002 - 2005 Ford Excursion and (so far as we can tell*) 2002 - 2007 models from the E-Series and F-Series lineups (E-250/F-250 and higher).
At issue is a faulty slider on the vehicles' multi-function switch. According to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "A multi-function switch with a deformed slider may malfunction causing the turn signal, tail lights, hazard, warning signal flashers and/or brake lights not to activate." While the slider flaw doesn't pose any direct threat to drivers or occupants, the failure of a vehicle's lighting system -- especially brake lights -- it could result in a serious accident.
The NHTSA bulletin doesn't indicate an exact date for this recall to begin, but estimates that it should happen on or before August 15, 2011. At that time, owners will be notified of the recall, and Ford will replace the faulty switches free of charge.
If you own one of the affected vehicles and want more information, contact your local dealer, or call Ford at 866-436-7332 and mention recall #11C18. (Have your VIN handy.) Alternately, you can contact the NHTSA at 888-327-4236 and reference campaign #11V352000.
* The NHTSA bulletin contains conflicting information about the inclusion of E-Series and F-Series vehicles, mentioning the E-Series in one section of the document and the F-Series in another. A representative from Ford, however, has said that both series are included in the recall.
